About Me

My photo
In 1943 I was drafted into World War 11 right out of Madison High School, Rochester, NY. This is my story as told in the letters I wrote home. They’re all here, all 192 of them. Spend some time with me as I describe my experiences in basic training and then off to war. They were written in an attempt to help me feel close to my family and to let them know what was going on in my life. It’s the first time I was away from home and I have to confess that I was homesick. My folks were Esther and Jacob Kaplow. We were four children in this order: Arnette, Ruth, Bob, and myself.

$2.00 Steak

Dear Reader: Every letter or card Ben wrote home is included in this blog.  A bit of history shows up in each one as you follow him.  Just think, a $2.00 steak!  Ben wrote three times on July 26th  -  This is the third - a post card.  The frequency of his letters will lessen when he goes through the Tennessee Maneuvers and then on to the Battle of the Bulge.

Mailed from Spartanburg at 3 p.m.

Dear Folks,
Gee, you must get tired of receiving so many cards from me in one day, but I’ve got some spare time in the U.S.O., so.....  I thought I was going to the Service Club to eat but it was crowded so I came to town (without checking out) & had a delicious tenderloin steak dinner ($2.00).  Then I came here to the Jewish U.S.O. & had waffles & ice tea & saw “Johnny Apollo.”  Quite a day, eh.

Well good by now,
Love
Ben
